"Wait, Inbal... that's HEBREW?!"
I get this reaction from students at least once a week.
They're expecting pure, biblical Hebrew - all ancient and formal.
But then I teach them a word like "Sababa" or "Bye" or "Yalla" and they look at me like I've just blown their minds.
"That sounds like Arabic!" "Wait, isn't that English?" "Are you sure that's really Hebrew??"
Yes, yes, and YES.
Here's what no Hebrew textbook tells you:
Modern Israeli Hebrew is this beautiful, eclectic mix of Biblical Hebrew, Modern Hebrew, borrowed Arabic words, English that's been "Hebrew-ized," Yiddish, and uniquely Israeli expressions that exist nowhere else on earth.
And THESE are the words that will make you sound like an actual Israeli instead of someone reciting from a prayer book.
So I did something I've never done before.
I went through the entire Hebrew alphabet (Alef to Tav) and for each letter, I picked the most common, useful, super-local Israeli word that my students are always shocked to learn.

Want to know what makes my students' jaws drop?
It's hearing words like these for the first time and realizing that Israeli Hebrew is so much more alive, more eclectic, more REAL than anything they imagined.
Each word comes with the story of how it became Israeli, when to use it, and why Israelis will instantly warm up to you when they hear you use it naturally.
Ready to shock yourself with how Hebrew actually sounds?

P.S. The best part? My students always tell me these are the words they remember most. Turns out, the "shocking" stuff sticks!
